All people online need to learn how to be safe on social networking sites. People sometimes take it for granted that they’re safe. But the truth is that there are risks involved when sharing information. People need to keep these in mind:
Be careful sharing your location
Unfortunately, there are people who are too lax when it comes to sharing locations online. It can be tempting to use social media to update friends on where you are. The problem though isthat these posts are usually public. So that means even other people might be able to view these posts.
For example, be wary about sharing your location as you move from place to place. After all, sometimes there are actual stalkers. A stalker could be someone you know who has an unhealthy preoccupation with you. Don’t give that person too much information to use.
Be careful sharing your photos
Another problem with social media is that people sometimes share sensitive photos. You have to think about the photos you share before you upload them. For example, your home may have security features such as keypads or locks. Don’t post photos of these.
Also, sometimes people just keep on posting photos from a particular event. They do this without thinking about how it affects other people. So, for example, you might be okay with photos online showing you partying hard. Other people might not appreciate being included in these photos though.
Be careful sharing personal information
Again, it’s about filtering things before you upload them. Before you post something on Facebook or Twitter, you need to consider it carefully. Ask yourself if the post contains information that could be used against you. Also consider if the information could harm or create problems for another person.
Remember that some of the security questions for your passwords involve personal information. These are questions only you should be able to answer ideally. So don’t share related information in your posts.
Be careful about online arguments
Because the internet feels anonymous, this causes people to say things they wouldn’t say otherwise. Anonymity isn’t quite there on social media, but sometimes people still say hurtful things. Be careful though about what you say or what arguments you get involved in. Unfortunately, sometimes online conflict carries over into real life.
Social media has its advantages and benefits. That said, you have to remember that if you’re not careful, it could hurt you. So keep this advice in mind, and keep on filtering what you post.
