How to Become a Bookkeeper

How to Become a Bookkeeper PhotoBeing a bookkeeper can be quite easy, especially if you have prior knowledge and experience, and it is especially something that can be done as a side job at home. What’s even great is that you do not even have to be a graduate of accounting in order to get this type of job, although it is an advantage. Here are some other advice on how to become a bookkeeper.

Be good with numbers

As a bookkeeper, you will be facing lots and lots of numbers. Most of the time, you will just be adding and subtracting numbers, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be careful, especially when you are handling huge numbers that can greatly affect your client’s finances.

Be detail oriented

Same as above, all details must be recorded as accurately as possible. This means that notes should be taken whenever necessary and all transactions must be placed properly into the books so that nothing would be left unaccounted for.

Take a bookkeeping course

While some companies do not require bookkeepers to have accounting degrees, some states do require certifications before they can be hired or given work. Certification procedures vary from state to state, but this would often entail completing a course and passing an exam.

Use bookkeeping software

In order to increase productivity, you can use accounting software such as MYOB or Quickbooks in order to make things faster. With these type of software, you can do jobs more efficiently and accurately, and you can also generate reports that much faster.

Despite having knowledge of how bookkeeping software work, you would still have to have basic and manual bookkeeping procedures just in case you would have to do it on the fly.

Get connected

Outside of getting hired as a bookkeeper, you can also do assignments on the side, and at the comfort of your own home. With this, you can ask around from friends and colleagues to refer you to people that would require your services. You can also advertise your services in social media such as Facebook or Twitter, in the hopes that other people may see it and hire you.

Being a bookkeeper is a great way to earn money while still being able to do a regular 9 to 5 job. However, it is very important that you be very focused and detail oriented in order to maintain a good image with your existing and potential clients.
