Get a relevant course in college
A physical therapy profession requires numerous science courses such as chemistry, physics and biology. Complete a bachelor’s degree program as preparation for a graduate degree. You need to take up the prerequisites in psychology, physics, anatomy, chemistry and physiology.
While in an undergraduate program, volunteer at physical therapy units or clinics. This will be an edge for you to practice physical therapy process and gain training from professionals. Since experience in a physical environment including patient interaction and rehabilitation is a requirement for admission, this is another reason why you have to do this.
Earn a graduate or master’s degree
The course that you need to earn is the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) or Master of Physical Therapy (MPT). You would also need to complete degree programs that are accredited by CAPTE (Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education).
Expose yourself to different clinical specialties, like neuro-rehabilitation and children’s physical therapy. This will help you gain experience and interpersonal skills.
Obtain a license
Take and pass the National Physical Therapy Examination to get a license for practicing Physical Therapy. Check on the exact licensing requirements of your state for this profession prior to taking the examination.
Complete the residency period
After graduating, complete residency programs which consists of 1,500 hours of physical therapy practice. This is where you will work as a physical therapy under supervision of professionals.
Choose a specialty
It is recommended for physical therapists to decide in an area such as pediatrics, sports and neurology. You need to pass another examination to obtain a certification on a specialty. This is a 200-question examination that you need to pass to become a certified physical therapist in a certain specialty.
To retain your license as a physical therapist, you would need to take continuous education and workshops. One of the advantages you’ll get on this line of work aside from great pay, you have a reason or a push to keep your body in great shape as you will need your muscles to perform some work.
