Learning the basics
Keep in mind that like most jobs, the requirements to be a preschool teacher vary from one learning institution to another. There are those which only require a high school diploma but there are also those who have higher requirements like a college degree.
Even though having a degree is not that a big deal when it comes to this profession, note that having it will be at your advantage. You will be able to access a larger pool of employment opportunities. There are some states that would require a preschool teacher to have a post secondary course in areas like early childhood education and child development.
Getting the degree
An associate degree is enough but having a bachelor’s is better. You can use the National Association for the Education of Young Children to help you find programs that would help you became a preschool teacher. Most likely, you will take courses like language development, child assessment, literature for children and curriculum planning.
There are some state that would require their preschool teacher to have a license. The thing is, each state has their own set of requirements. Chances are, they would ask you to earn a Child Development Associate designation that is issued by the Council for Professional Recognition.
Finding a job
With a degree and license at hand, you are now armed to look for an education institution that would hire your services. When you are hire, note that usually, you would have the summer off unless you plan on teaching summer courses. It’s natural to go look for a part-time job for summer. Just make sure that it will not get in the way of your preschool teacher career.
Of course, you can stop now. But why stop when you can aim higher? From preschool teacher, you can work your way up in the ladder and be an assistant teacher. From assistant teacher, you can move further and be a teacher then move your way up to higher lead teaching positions.
Being a preschool teacher is a very serious job. They are the one who will start to mold the minds of the next generation.
