It’s important to learn how to defend your home. After all, this is where you keep your important possessions. If you have a family, this is where the important people in your life stay and spend their nights. You need to make sure this place is protected.
Lock your doors and windows
Even if you live in a secure area, you need to lock up. This is something that too many people get careless about. When people are already home, and no one will go out, lock doors and windows. Make sure to double check these to make sure they’re all sealed tight.
You will also need to talk with your kids and other family members. You need to make sure that everyone is on board. That way, if they notice a door that is unlocked, they can help. Also, they should know not to sneak out at night.
Make sure your locks are sturdy
It isn’t very helpful to lock up at night, if the locks aren’t solid. So you need to make sure that they can do the job. Some locks are designed to be more solid than others. Make sure that they are the types which are difficult to kick or force open.
Try to put yourself in the shoes of a burglar. Maybe do a little research online as well. Find out how burglars get into doors or windows. Then, change your hardware to make this more difficult for them.
Install an alarm
Installing an alarm will entail added expense, of course. But it can be worth it to give you greater piece of mind. There are different kinds of systems which offer different features. At the very least, you want it to alert you in case of a break in.
There are even fancier alarms which will notify you or local law enforcement if an intrusion is detected. This notification can be very helpful if you are away on vacation. At least, if you are alerted to an attempted break in, you could still have time to react.
Install motion-sensing lights
Ideally, you want to deter any would-be intruders from even approaching your home. One way to do this is with motion-sensing lights. These make sure that if there is anyone skulking around, they will be made very visible. Hopefully this will make them think twice.
It takes time, effort and expense to more fully defend your home. It has to be something you really want. So keep this advice in mind, and make the necessary changes.
