One out of seven drivers on the roads of US doesn’t have auto insurance. And to think that over 2 million are injured or disabled yearly.
When you think about it, maybe it’s time you got yourself a good auto insurance.
Here are 5 tips on how to get a great deal on your car insurance policy:
Check your current policy
You may be able to save a lot by just checking your current policy. If it has auto insurance, ask your insurance agent about it. But first, figure out how much coverage you need for auto insurance.
Chances are you still need to get a separate policy because your current policy is incomplete.
Ask around and search
You can check several sites online for good insurance companies that give out quotes immediately. InsuranceRates.com is a good site to begin with.
Although, don’t limit yourself to just one or two sites. Check as many sites as possible. Read customer reviews. Find the one with the best value and the best premium.
Don’t forget to do a little background research on the company if you think it’s a bit dodgy.
While you’re at it, try to look at your budget, as well. This would be your primary basis on which premium to choose. But don’t limit yourself too much.
Remember, your life and your passenger’s might be at stake here. Paying a bit more than necessary might be called for.
Find available discounts
As the National Association of Insurance Commissioners suggests, check available discounts for your car insurance. Talk to the agent assigned to you for insurance discounts you can avail of that their company offers. Auto policies are quite expensive so these discounts might come in handy.
Discounts might be given to:
- People with good driving records
- People who finished driver’s education, basic and advanced
- Cars with safety equipment installed, like antilock brakes
- Long-time policy owners
Don’t forget to negotiate with your agent, as well. Negotiations can go far and might grant you less financial burden.
Review the insurance policy
Once you have everything set, review the policy completely. Check if it has the coverage you want and if it complies with your state’s legal requirements.
Also check if the policy if it includes coverage for the costs of a rental car if yours become disabled due to an accident.
Get a less expensive car
If you think the policy is still too much, change your car. A low-risk car is easier to insure and would require a less expensive premium.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has a list of what they deem to be the safest car picks of 2011. You can choose from one of the cars there and pay less.
With more and more teenage drivers out on the road, your risk of getting in a car accident increase. Aside from the insurance policy, it’s always better to just drive safely. The policy is, after all, just a safety net. That doesn’t mean you have to jump right in and injure yourself.
