Do not click on hyperlinks
Hyperlinks especially those within emails are usually hidden. If you’re unsure of the sender, there’s a bigger chance that the hyperlink won’t lead you to where it’s supposed to. Most emails with this modus would talk about your bank account.
Although the initial reaction is oftentimes doing whatever the email says, it’s best to call the bank first. Tell them what’s in the email and ask a confirmation if they actually sent that email.
Prices are too good to be true
Because emails may appear unattractive and uninteresting, Phishing now has another method which involves a particular contests. Invitation to a contest will be offered to you by email, and once you get to their website, you will be asked to enter your personal information for a chance to win tempting prizes.
Common prizes are the latest gadgets, an all-expense paid holiday trip, and all those tempting things that get too difficult to disregard. As much as you want to win it, these prizes are just too good to be true. That is why it’s highly recommended to avoid transacting with these websites because most likely it’s just a scam.
Another Phishing modus would be to send pop-up warnings. It may say “strongly suspicious files have been found on your computer! Click here to download a security fix!”. Most messages are filled with exclamation points, which increases your normal panic mode into severe.
In such cases, it’s highly advisable to focus and stay composed. Do not download anything or click on any hyperlinks, unless you want your computer to be eaten by viruses.
Keep your security software updated
Having a security system on your PC may not be enough. It is highly recommended keeping it updated all the time. Most software show messages on your screen whenever a newer and better version of it is available. Do not hesitate to spend a couple of minutes to update it. This way, you can ensure that your computer is highly protected all the time. Phishing can be strong and powerful thus; having a stronger shield can go a long way.
Although the technology has helped many of us in various ways, still we can’t erase the fact that there are some people who are out and wanting to use technology in the wrong way. They try to exceed the minds of those who create security software so that their viruses can overpower it.
With that being said, it’s quite beneficial to get yourself educated. Spending a few hours each day researching and applying helpful techniques like this can truly benefit you.
